I played guitar on this for my old friend Sid in a practice space in L.A. – it was a demo at the time, one of his first, but here it is on his album, which came out this year. I really liked doing this : after years of playing ” big ” guitar, it was fun to play as ” small ” as possible, a Telecaster through an old Fender Vibro-Champ.

The Boy Who Cried Werewolf. This here’s about as close as you’re ever going to get to a White Zombie reunion, not that Sean and I are actually playing together on this record – well, I probably did play a little tambourine or something, but it’s hard to remember. This album was recorded over a bunch of different sessions at Piety Street and some other places in New Orleans. Rik Slave sang ” Carry It With You ” in an abandoned pre-civil war building, in 90º heat, in the dark, lit only by the glowing tubes in an antique radio. That sounds so made-up, doesn’t it? It’s not — if you listen closely you can hear the extra-spooky sound.

Chinese Crawfish. I get a lot of love for this record, and the truth is I didn’t have to do very much. We put Louie’s ” drum kit ” ( the snare is an Ace Hardware bucket, the kick has a big cowbell bolted on it ) in my kitchen, and his ” P.A. ” ( an old Muzak-brand tube amp going through a plastic Radio Shack bullhorn ) in a closet, and the songs just started pouring out of him. Everything you hear here is live, 1 take ( okay, ” I’m 13 ” has a Casio SK-1 overdub ), and the entire album took a couple of 2-hour sessions to record – Louie had an ” interesting ” life at the time, I couldn’t pin him down for longer than that .

I I made this little thing at a friends’ house back in .. I don’t remember, early 2000s – back when the first ” Pro Tools Lite ” came out. I had a really cheap little tube mic pre ( dig the layers of hiss ), a Shure SM57, a little amp ( not to play through, but to slap for a reverb-y percussion sound ) and whatever instruments were lying around .. well, okay, the nice old Fender Rhodes electric piano I played wasn’t just lying around. I really like this – my caffeinated attempt to channel Joe Zawinul noodling as his spacecraft falls slowly into the sun .. and if you get what I mean by that, you are definitely dorky enough to be looking at this website.

Yeah Indeed. I guess 20 years ago Ballzack would’ve been a ” rapper ” and I would’ve been a ” producer ” and we would’ve ” made beats ” … but these being modern times and he being the odd talent that he is, we did this. I borowed half-busted old synths, learned how to do MIDI, and sampled warped records I found in Hurricane Katrina mud.
