I’ve always liked the Black Lips, and I really dig about half of this album, but what I find particularly interesting about it is Mark Ronson’s production. Ronson is a well-to-do, jetset-y guy who makes tasteful, glossy pop music ( that’s not a dis : he’s very, very talented ) , and the Black Lips are, well, it’s whole thing, but tasteful and glossy are not words that come to mind — but here Ronson does a really admirable job of making everything work without imposing too much of his will. The sound’s still fuzzed-out, scuzzed-out, freaky, and there’s lots of big, nasty spring reverb, but the band’s a little more in tune, the material’s a little more concise, and everything’s more .. substantial, I guess. Anyway, here it is, my Sunday morning jam.
