Minutemen : ” Prelude ” * 1981

|November 22, 2010 | Found Sounds

Here’s another tiny, twangy, happy little guitar song. I discovered this tune ( actually a radical reworking of an instrumental piece by T.Rex ) on a punk compilation tape ( this ) when I was 15, and besides just liking the melody and sound of the track, I dig the simplicity of it, which contrasts nicely with much of the Minutemen’s jazzy, off-kilter, often challenging body of work. The sound of the guitar is unusually thin and brittle, which makes me wonder what kind of super low-output pickups are at play, but D.Boon was a brilliant guitarist and his hands make it happen. BTW, if you want to see a really great, eye-opening rock doc, check out We Jam Econo – The Story Of The Minutemen.
