” How Could I Feel It ” * 1981

Taken from Society Dog’s ” Off The Leash ” EP, Subterranean Records Sub 13. Wow. I am officially designating this song to be ” punk as fuck ” . How do you even get a guitar to sound like that? Another tune from a record I bought with paper route money in distant years past.

This is probably a homemade recording on 4-or 8-track. Given the limited number of channels they had back then, adding anything to the basic instruments and lead vocals involved laborious bouncing and combining of tracks ( and much loss of fidelity with every bounce ) – so you’ve got to give it up for the super-loud backup vocals and handclaps the band deemed more important than the drums, which sound like they were recorded with one microphone to begin with. Screw it, I love the way it sounds.

I continue to be fascinated by the pop element that can almost always be found in early punk and hardcore recordings. Although what these people were playing at the time was the most agressive, alienated, and even flat-out ugly music around, they grew up listening to hit songs in the pre-punk era — and were completely bound by the rules of that era: there must be a vocal hook, there must be a guitar hook, and there must be a catchy chorus. Indeed, many underground recordings by teenagers from the early 1980s exhibit a harmonic sensibility more fully-formed than that of rock music on the radio today.

” Achin ” 1981

Fatima Records FTM-79. I know I bought this 45 when I was 14 years old but I don’t remember listening to it – being that around that time I was really into bands like Black Flag, Flipper, and Discharge, this was probably way too smooth for me.

I never really thought about The Plugz beyond being delighted by their Spanish language version of ” Secret Agent Man ” on the Repo Man soundtrack, but this tune has me wanting to go and find their albums. More about the great lyrics here. Oh, and don’t forget the cover art by the legendary Gary Panter.

” In The Arts ” 1972

No news. This is southern Louisiana – things move very sloooooooooowly here at the best of times and we’re just coming out of carnival season. There’s a couple, two, three ( four, actually ) records I’m involved with coming back from the pressing plant presently..   in the meantime, I’ll share these little things when they pop up.

The New Zoo Review, Disneyland/ Funco STER 1344. Found this one while thrifting in Gretna, LA. All the songs are about art.. I have to admit, I’m a little obsessed with this tune — the ham-fisted synth solo at 1:25, that not-funky-at-all wah wah guitar, Doug and Emmy Jo ( they were the humans on the show ) shouting ” Yeah! Oh Yeah !! “, you can’t beat it.

This next number’s a great example of how ” with-it ” culture ( drugs, psychedelia, hair ) permeated everything in the late 60s and early 70s. At 0:57 there’s a reference to LSD. On a record for children, released by the Disney corporation.
