Rock City Morgue

The Boy Who Cried Werewolf. This here’s about as close as you’re ever going to get to a White Zombie reunion, not that Sean and I are actually playing together on this record – well, I probably did play a little tambourine or something, but it’s hard to remember. This album was recorded over a bunch of different sessions at Piety Street and some other places in New Orleans. Rik Slave sang ” Carry It With You ” in an abandoned pre-civil war building, in 90º heat, in the dark, lit only by the glowing tubes in an antique radio. That sounds so made-up, doesn’t it? It’s not — if you listen closely you can hear the extra-spooky sound.

Hey J.

A friend of mine sent me this little tune he wrote about me the other day – I’m not at liberty to tell you who it is, but if you’re from New Orleans you’ll probably know right away. It’s a goof, but the fact that it was recorded with a 4track app on an iPhone kind of freaks me out. It’s a big world and this may already be happening somewhere, or, mark my words, it will happen soon : someone’s going to record a song on a cel phone, or through the little mic on a laptop, or with one of those little pocket recorders ( here‘s the one I’ve been using, I really like it ), and it’s going to be a huge hit .

Rock City Morgue ” The Boy Who Cried Werewolf “

This here’s about as close as you’re ever going to get to a White Zombie reunion, not that Sean and I are actually playing together on this record – well, I probably did play a little tambourine or something, but it’s hard to remember. Here’s 3 songs from the brand new Rock City Morgue LP, ” The Boy Who Cried Werewolf “, which we recorded over a bunch of different sessions at Piety Street and some other places in New Orleans. Rik Slave sang ” Carry It With You ” in an abandoned pre-civil war building, in 90º heat, in the dark, lit only by the glowing tubes in an antique radio. That sounds so made-up, doesn’t it? C’mon ” Stealing Seconds “

|July 20, 2009 | Uncategorized

Here’s how we make records in the future : engineer emails me basic tracks, band comes over to studio, does guitar and vocals, we mix the track real quick, we email the mix to the pressing plant, and the band is out the door and headed back up to Canada to go on tour. This song is on a limited 7″, although you may be able to get one from the record label, and you can learn more about C’mon here.

Where You From? 1989

|July 18, 2009 | Found Sounds, New Orleans Music

Fast forward 20 years from when this rare 12″ came out, and not that much has changed – New Orleans is still the city that is overlooked, the city of doom, and definitely where the party people are at. ” Where __ You From ” is the sort of record that was sold at a few local stores and from the trunks of cars in the neighborhoods that were later destroyed by flooding after Hurricane Katrina. This kind of old school MCing was already dated in ’89, but young producer Mannie ( credited as ” Manny ” ) Fresh gives these tracks a bumping and infectious live feel, underpinning everything with traditional brass band rhythms.

Superman Talks To A Dolphin * 1975

|July 5, 2009 | Found Sounds

This is from a 1975 Superman story LP on the Power label ( an imprint of Peter Pan records ) and it makes me giggle every time I hear it. I love the awkward edits and sound effects. I love that Lois Lane sounds like she smokes 5 packs a day. What I love most, though, is imagining the Power Records crew ( I have a stack of these comic book albums and it’s always the same voices, so I kind of feel like I know the actors ) trying to figure out what dolphin language might sound like, really wanting to go to lunch, and underwhelming the listening public with this :
