Thing I hope never to see again : members of Kiss, on the jumbotron, in full makeup, discussing basketball with a sports announcer. On the other hand, there was a giant confetti-storm, and there were explosions and fireworks. I went into the thing jaded as hell, but the band sounded great and I ultimately had as much fun as everybody else.
This track totally slipped my mind ’til 2 weeks ago when I saw Keith Morris in Austin TX fronting his current band ( OFF!, which looked like this ). Ruined Eye was the group I put together to record Land Of Treason ( the original is the third track on the Germs’ only album, 1979’s (GI) ) for Germs ( Tribute ) : A Small Circle Of Friends in 1996.

I understand that my fondness for the brutalist concrete structures of the 1960s and 70s has something to do with their epitomizing the urban landscape of this country during the period in which I was first becoming aware of it. Would I like them as much outside of that context, in the abstract? It’s impossible for me to say.
I understand also that progress is unstoppable ( see every movie about the advent of talking pictures, from Singin’ In The Rain to The Artist, contemplate doing your next album entirely on tape, look at the face of that guy who’s watching his beautiful 1966 Ford Mustang getting cranked up onto a tow truck ), and that the pragmatic must often triumph over the aesthetic, especially when it comes to functional, tax-funded buildings. I know what an expensive nightmare it is to fit an old building with a new, up-to-code sprinkler system, and I know that concrete shifts, cracks, and leaks.
I do wonder, however, if it’s really necessary for the future to be this boring. It’s the future, remember? The Architects Newspaper.

I don’t think people are generally aware that Kustom also made guitars. I’ve tried a few of them out, and I think they’re quite handsome, but it’s not hard to see why they’re uncommon : they’re almost impossible to play. If you’ve ever picked up an old Rickenbacker or Mosrite and been surprised by their small scale, imagine a guitar with an even slimmer neck and smaller frets.
