” Last night I went to Hollywood to have beers and talk business with a friend I made at SXSW. My friend had been invited to a private club in Hollywood so we decided to go check it out. We had to enter from an alley on Cahuenga just north off Hollywood Blvd. The space looked like a time warp from NYC 1982 ( or Hollywood for that matter ) – a three level retail store covered in graffiti, dust and empty clothing racks. There were two bars, a stage on the third floor and lots of young hipster kids .. not Echo Park hipster. These kids were a mix of Black, Asian, White, Mexican and all SUPER nice, no attitude. It was bizarre. About 20 minutes after we arrived the band started. “
” Vex Ruffin. Your basic Filipino kid from Chino Hills. His record / EP is him with a drum machine, a guitar and a sampler. Live they’re a four piece. His younger brother on drums, their friend on bass and dude that plays cowbell, shaker and hits the sample machine every so often. The little brother can barely play the drums but it’s AWESOME! The family was on hand to watch the performance. The Mom, Dad, Aunt and cousins had all drove in to watch the show. It made me really happy. The band was so pure and unpretentious that it kind of blew my mind. I bought extra copies of the record to give to my friends I liked it so much. “
” I went to Hollywood to talk biz and ended up seeing one of the punkest shows I’ve ever been to. It was a great night, I was meant to be there. “

Christiania

” Christiania is the Western world’s longest existing alternative society, an autonomous community in the center of Copenhagen, Denmark. Ruled according to codes outside of conventional law and order, Christiania is a self-proclaimed ‘Freetown’, governed by its own organization. “
” Founded in 1971 by a group of hippies, its inhabitants of around 900 people are currently facing an existential and property rights crisis. The social experiment’s aging population of 1960s counterculturalists are fighting a less tolerant government as well as an intensified commercial property interest of the area, situated right in the middle of Copenhagen’s most attractive neighborhoods. “
I actually played a gig there in the 1990s, a pick-up show on a day off while we were touring Europe opening for Danzig. All I can say is, what a fucking trip. Imagine a medieval Danish village populated by velvet-wearing leprechauns and punks, and there really are horses and wagons and swords and wizards, but, instead of vegetables or bread, the stalls at the village market sell drugs and paraphernalia. Everything’s groovy, unless you try to take a picture, in which case the leprechauns get a bit aggressive. We played with Paul DiAnno – you know, the singer on the first two Iron Maiden albums? I certainly like those records, and I remember him being a friendly fellow. Next to the club, the Christiania hippies had a candle-lit restaurant which felt like an inn from the 1700s, and they fed us, and it was bar none the best food we ate on the entire tour.
